The flowers of this superb Hydrangea cultivar start white and then gain a pink tinge as the season progresses. The leaves also undergo a transformation from green through to stunning shades of bronze and purple before they eventually drop. This hardy shrub holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit and is easy to keep and shade tolerant, making it the ideal choice for almost anywhere in your garden. Hydrangea plants should be regularly watered until they are fully established. The faded flower heads can be left in place until the new buds swell in spring as this will protect the fragile buds from frost damage. Hydrangea quercifolia can be grown in any rich, fertile soil that is also moist. The soil can be improved before planting by the addition of plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost which should be mixed in thoroughly and deeply.
