Macdonald Hotels was founded in 1990 by Donald Macdonald, who had previously made his name as managing director of Stakis Hotels. Starting by purchasing two Scottish hotels, the company grew rapidly through acquisitions including former Forte Heritage Hotels and properties from De Vere and The Rank Organisation.
The company was floated on the stock market in 1996 and later taken private in a £590 million management buyout in 2003 facilitated by Bank of Scotland. Headquartered in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland, Macdonald Hotels focuses on developing a portfolio of four and five-star properties.
Today, the group owns and operates hotels and holiday resorts across the UK and Spain, employing between 1,001 and 5,000 staff. The company has won the AA Hotel Group of the Year (2007-08) and National Customer Service Awards for Leisure and Tourism.
