About Specsavers

Specsavers was launched in 1984 by husband and wife team Doug and Mary Perkins on the island of Guernsey. The couple started the business on a ping-pong table in their spare room after UK regulations changed to allow professionals to advertise their services.

Doug and Mary had previously run Bebbington and Perkins Opticians, which they sold in 1980 before moving to Guernsey. From these humble beginnings, Specsavers has grown into a £4.18 billion business operating 2,815 practices across 11 countries.

The family business remains headquartered in Guernsey with over 500 staff based there. In 2023, the company was placed into a family trust ensuring it cannot be sold to private equity, with the Perkins's son John serving as CEO and four grandchildren involved in the business.
