Private White V.C. is a menswear label that hand-cuts, sews and finishes its garments at Cottenham House, its own factory on Cottenham Lane in Salford, Greater Manchester. The factory was founded in 1853 and keeps an archive of 25,000 patterns and 15,000 garments. According to Forbes, the brand was launched by James Eden, great-grandson of its namesake.
The brand says it sources more than 90% of its materials within 20 miles of the factory. Copper rivets, zips and fasteners on its garments refer to the telephone wire Jack White tied around himself to tow wounded soldiers across the Diyala river in Mesopotamia on 7 March 1917, the act that won him the Victoria Cross. He later rose from pattern cutter to sole owner of a Manchester raincoat factory.
