About Burleigh

Burleigh is a historic British pottery company founded in 1851 in Burslem as Hulme and Booth, taken over in 1862 by William Leigh and Frederick Rathbone Burgess to become Burgess & Leigh. The trademark Burleigh, used from the 1930s, combines both names. In 1889, they moved to Middleport Pottery - a purpose-built model factory on the Trent & Mersey Canal, now a Grade II* listed building. The Leigh family took sole control in 1912. Following difficult 1990s conditions, the Dorling family purchased the business, and in 2010 Burleigh was acquired by Denby Holdings Limited. In 2014, Prince Charles visited to open a visitor centre following Prince's Regeneration Trust renovation. Burleigh is the last pottery in the world using underglaze tissue printing.
