Grow Pyracantha plants as free-standing shrubs train as a hedge, or grow against a wall or fence. Plant Firethorn into any well drained, reliably moist soil in sun or semi shade. Choose a position with shelter from cold, drying winds. ‘Red Star’ is a cottage garden favourite for its evergreen properties, providing luscious forest green foliage all year round with gorgeous glowing red berries throughout the cold winter months! The clustered red berries that appear will attract many birds and insects, making this a great choice for wildlife areas. This trustworthy hardy shrub is less thorny than other varieties, with strong branches, ideally used as security fencing or for structure against walls! Feed and water Pyracantha plants regularly until full established. Prune free-standing shrubs in early spring, removing damaged and poorly positioned shoots. For wall trained shrubs, tie in main shoots to form part of the permanent framework, and cut back unwanted shoots to the main stem. After flowering in summer, shorten the remaining stems to 3 leaves from the base, in order to expose the developing berries, and maximise the display. Remove any old fruit trusses in spring to make room for new growth. Caution: harmful if eaten.
