You’ll love the stunning sunset hues of Oenothera versicolor 'Sunset Boulevard', which gradually change from apricot to red as the flowers mature. A valuable addition to the border, the blooms change from pale tangerine to apricot and finish crimson red - the combination of open and spent blooms create a gorgeous glowing display when backlit by the afternoon sun. Whorls of large, cup-shaped, fiery flowers are carried on upright spikes and open in the daytime for a dazzling display. Drought tolerant and easy to grow, ‘Sunset Boulevard’ flowers freely from summer to autumn and looks lovely in cottage gardens, coastal areas, dry gardens and rockeries. Let the flowers self-seed for effortless colour through informal borders where their bold blooms attract plenty of pollinators. Sow from late winter to mid spring on the surface of a good seed compost just covering the seed with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Germination takes 14- 21 days at 10-15C (50-60F). Don't exclude light, sealing in a polythene bag after sowing is helpful. When large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings to boxes or 7.5cm (3in) pots, and grow on in cooler conditions. When well grown gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out in late spring after all risk of frost has passed, 30cm (12in) apart in full sun and ordinary well drained soil.
