Highly sought after and incredibly impressive, the truly special large sky-blue blooms of Meconopsis ‘Lingholm’ (Himalayan Blue Poppy) have real wow-factor and are a wonderful way to introduce a burst of unusual colour to the shadier parts of the garden and always create a talking point. This hardy perennial thrives in cool, partially shaded conditions in a soil which is nutrient rich and slightly acidic. If your soil isn’t right, you can also enjoy them in pots filled with ericaceous compost. Planted in drift or swathes, these special perennials will simply astound you year after year. Pot up meconopsis plants into rich compost and grow them on in bright, frost-free conditions with protection from strong, direct sunlight. When they are well grown, acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days, prior to planting out in their final positions. Choose a sheltered spot in semi or dappled shade - a cool, moist woodland situation is ideal, but the Himalayan poppy will also thrive in a moist, shaded border. Meconopsis prefers a rich, moist, neutral to acid, well drained soil that remains moist throughout summer, but does not sit wet in winter. Meconopsis poppies particularly dislike dry soils and excessive heat. Water regularly during hot, dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. In spring, apply a mulch of chipped bark, leaf mould or other organic matter around the crown of the plant. Deadhead faded blue econopsis flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced.
