Mahonia plants are prickly evergreens, so are ideal for security planting and deterring burglars and cats from your garden. Grow Mahonia plants in borders or containers in any rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun or semi shade. Although Mahonia plants are hardy they will appreciate a sheltered position away from cold, drying winds. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil.
