A unique and elegant hedging choice ideal for informal, cottage or wildlife gardens, Viburnum opulus (also known as Guelder Rose) forms an attractive hedge full of season interest. From large snowball clusters of white flowers in spring which attract pollinators, to bright red berries in autumn along with fiery foliage colour, this hardy and reliable plant has it all. Perfect for making a lovely, natural-looking hedge around your garden for screening and privacy, its dense, bushy habit also makes an effective noise filter for nearby roads. This easy to grow and low-maintenance variety can be pruned to the size and shape required and will grow well in most gardens. It’s a particularly resilient hedging choice, even tolerant to coastal or exposed conditions. Supplied as 60 - 90 cm bareroots. Planting distance: 30 - 45cm (12 - 18") or 4 plants per metre for a single line hedge. Grow Viburnum opulus in any moist, but well drained garden soil in full sun or partial shade, plants will tolerate exposed and coastal areas quite successfully too. Viburnum opulus require minimal pruning, you should only trim plants to remove any dead or damaged growth. This should be done during the spring. Plants will also tolerate a harder, regenerate prune if they become poor shaped after a few years.
