Gazania splendens 'New Day Mix' are ideal for adding long lasting colour to summer bedding schemes and patio pots. The short stems support large, wide blooms that open quickly and remain open for longer, so you can keep on enjoying this sensational blend of vibrant Gazania. These versatile plants will even tolerate windy coastal positions. Sow gazania from February to April on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm down. Lightly cover the seed with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 18-25C (64-77F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged and not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 14-30 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When gazania plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in any light, sandy, well-drained soil in full sun, at a distance of 30cm (12") apart. Feed and water gazania plants until they are fully established. Regular deadheading of faded gazania flowers will encourage more blooms to be produced.
