& Dahlia Pompone 5 Tubers Summer Flowering

Thompson & Morgan Dahlia ‘Pompone Mixed’ will give your garden a vibrant splash of late summer colour. These small but perfectly formed flower heads give borders a lovely vintage feel and create a wonderful colour mix. The tall stems of this decorative dahlia add height and structure to the back of borders, and are perfect for cutting for your own bouquets. Choose a sunny position to plant dahlia tubers in April after all risk of frost has passed in most, well-drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well-rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6”) and water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June. Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses of flowers. As dahlias develop, the taller varieties will require staking with garden canes to support their stems. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produces. With the first autumn frosts, remove tubers from their growing positions and trim away the old steams to 5cm above the tuber. Clean any remaining soil from the tubers and store them over winter in trays of peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position. The tubers can be planted the following spring for another fabulous display.
