Grow your own delicious aubergines (egg plants) with Black Beauty - an excellent quality, early maturing aubergine producing sturdy plants and a reliable and abundant crop of large, tasty, purple-black, pear-shaped fruit. Contains vitamins E and K – eat on day of harvest for maximum vitamin content. Very tasty fried (prepare by slicing, salting, rinsing and flouring), stuffed and in Moussaka. This semi-tropical plant is best grown under glass. Sow January to April. Plant out mid-May to June. Harvest August to October. Sow in a propagator on a windowsill or in a greenhouse at approx. 15-20 degrees Celsius (60-68 degrees Fahrenheit) using a good quality, finely sieved, moist compost. Cover the seeds with 6mm (0.25") sieved compost. (Germination 14-21 days.) Transplant the seedlings when large enough to handle singly into 75mm (3") pots. Finally transplant into large pots, grow bags or the greenhouse border allowing 45-50cm (1.5-2.5') between plants. Limit the number of fruits per plant to 3 or 4. Mature height approx. 120cm (4'). Will fruit successfully in either a cold or slightly heated greenhouse.
