Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is a familiar biennial wildflower in Britain, producing tall spires of purple, thimble-like flowers above a low rosette of downy leaves. Adored by bumblebees, these flowers add vertical interest to borders and informal areas. When allowed to self-seed, Foxgloves will naturally drift through the garden, creating a charming, informal display. Flowering occurs in the second year, with plants forming a low leaf rosette in the first year. Height: 120cm (47in). Spread: 45cm (18in). Sow seeds very thinly outdoors in late spring or early summer in a well-prepared seed bed, 1. 5mm (1/16in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart. Keep the soil damp until germination and thin seedlings to 15cm (6in) apart when large enough to handle. Transplant 60cm (24in) apart in autumn for flowering the following year. Alternatively, sow in seed trays on fine compost without covering the seeds, keeping trays moist in a propagator or bag. When seedlings are large enough, prick out into 9cm pots. These plants prefer acidic soils in part shade and will flower the following summer. Sowing successive years ensures a continuous display. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, toxic if eaten.
