Viola ‘Allspice Mixed’ offers a spectacular range of flower colours and forms, combined with a wonderful variety of fragrances – each colour has its own distinctive scent. Perfect for hanging baskets, window boxes, and flower pouches, these trailing violas bring vibrant colour and delightful perfume to your garden throughout spring and early summer. Positioned by doors or windows, they provide a welcoming display that’s both beautiful and fragrant. Some parts of these flowers are edible, making them a charming addition to the kitchen as well as the garden. Crystallised petals are ideal for decorating cakes and biscuits, or they can be scattered fresh into salads for a splash of colour. Sow from spring to autumn on the surface of good seed compost, firm down lightly, and place in a propagator at 15–20°C (59–68°F) or cover with polythene. Keep the compost moist but not wet, avoiding excessive heat, and do not exclude light. Germination takes 14–21 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow on in cooler conditions. Once plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade.
