A healthy addition to your grow-your-own collection, Cranberries are prized for their high vitamin and antioxidant content. These low-growing plants form an attractive ground cover and can be grown alongside blueberries for both aesthetic and culinary purposes. When grown from seed, fruiting may take a few years, but the results are worthwhile, offering fresh berries that are rarely found in supermarkets. Height: 15cm (6in). Spread: 30cm (12in). Sow in trays or pots using a good seed compost, covering seeds lightly with compost or vermiculite. Germination can be slow. After sowing, seal containers in a polythene bag and leave at 15-18°C (60-65°F) for 2 weeks, then place in a refrigerator for 3-6 weeks. Return to the recommended germination temperature. If germination does not occur within 6-10 weeks, return to the fridge for a further 3-6 weeks. Examine regularly and remove seeds showing signs of germination. Cranberries prefer well-drained, acidic soil and should ideally be watered with rainwater. Protect developing fruits with netting from birds.
