Phragmites australis, also known as Common Reed or Norfolk Reed, is a striking native aquatic perennial widely recognised across Britain’s wetlands. This tall grass produces upright stems clothed in glossy green foliage, crowned in summer with feathery purple flower heads that sway elegantly in the breeze. Beyond its ornamental beauty, Norfolk Reed is a vital part of wetland ecosystems, offering food and shelter for wildlife. It is also valued for its practical uses, including water treatment and traditional roof thatching. Growing up to 3m (118") tall, it makes a bold and naturalistic statement in large ponds, lakes, and wildlife gardens. Growing Instructions Plant in moist, boggy soil or submerge in ponds to a maximum depth of 50cm (20"). Position in full sun for best growth. Once established, Phragmites needs little maintenance. In autumn, cut back stems to just above the water surface for a tidy display, or leave seed heads intact for attractive winter structure and wildlife interest.
