Available at Robert Dyas
Butternut Squash 'Betternut' F1 is an improved variety offering a longer, thicker neck that provides more flesh and makes slicing easier. This semi-vining, space-efficient squash produces fruits weighing 2. 5-3kg with a smaller seed cavity, reducing waste. Powdery mildew resistance adds to its ease of growing, making it an excellent choice for home gardeners. Plants reach approximately 60cm (24in) in height with a 150cm (59in) spread. Sow seeds indoors from April to May in 7. 5cm (3"") pots of seed compost at 2cm (¾"") depth. Maintain a temperature of 20-25°C (68-77°F) until germination in 5-7 days. Once germinated, grow on in cooler conditions, hardening off plants before transplanting outside after frost risk has passed. Alternatively, direct sow outdoors from May in warm, well-drained soil in full sun, spacing plants 90cm (36"") apart, sowing two seeds per hole and thinning to the strongest seedling. Water regularly to prevent soil drying out and hoe between plants to control weeds. Apply high potash fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season for best results. Harvest before the first frosts when the skin hardens and fruits crack near the stem. Cut fruits from the stem leaving several centimetres attached. Image may be included for illustration of supply but can vary due to seasonality changes (e. g. deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months). Decorative pots are not supplied.
