Description

Aubergine ‘Graffiti’ (Grafted) produces glossy, zebra-striped fruits that weigh up to 400g and measure 15–20cm in length. These almost spineless plants are easy to grow and harvest, and the firm white flesh is perfect for grilling, roasting, or stir-fries. Height: 75cm (30in). Spread: 60cm (24in). Sow aubergine seeds from February to May for indoor cultivation or March to April for outdoor growing. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to improve germination. Sow on the surface of moist, free-draining seed compost and cover with 6mm (0. 25") of vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal in a polythene bag at 18–21°C (65–70°F) until germination, 10–14 days. When seedlings are large enough, transplant into 7. 5cm (3") pots and grow on at slightly reduced temperature. After the last frost and when soil is warm, harden off and plant outdoors in fertile soil, 90cm (3') apart, with rows 90–120cm (3–4') apart. Grow in full sun with protection from wind, and consider black plastic mulch to warm soil and reduce weeds. Maintain soil moisture, stake plants as they grow, pinch out the main tip to encourage bushiness, and feed with a high-potash tomato feed every two weeks. Limit each plant to 5–6 fruits for best size. Harvest from August onwards when fruits are glossy and fully coloured. Images shown are for guidance only and show the expected results of plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary results. Image may be included for illustration of supply but can vary due to seasonality changes (e. g. , deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months). Decorative pots are not supplied.
