Simply hold your hand about 15cm above the infrared panel and the lid will open automatically; dispose the rubbish within five seconds, and it will softly close again automatically. The automatic sensor dustbin can be operated manually using the touch button controls on the front of the lid unit if preferred, or when the batteries need replacing.
