The rail at the top allows you to hang your clothes freely without creasing, there is a shelf in the lower part of the robe but this can be removed if you wish to have full hanging space. If you keep the shelf in it creates a separate storage area below for folded clothes or shoes or indeed for spare bedding, also you can use the shelf itself as further storage.
