About Cornish Sea Salt

Cornish Sea Salt was founded by Tony Fraser after a chance discovery inspired the reinvention of an ancient industry. While walking on the south coast of Cornwall, he came across an Iron Age salt works in a remote cove and became determined to re-imagine the sea salt industry for the 21st century. The Cornish sea salt business had originally died out in 1860 when rock salt started to be mined in Cheshire. Before that, sea salt was an invaluable element of Cornwall's pilchard fishing industry. Tony saw an opportunity to bring back sea salt production to Cornwall, utilising the mineral-rich waters of the region. Incorporated in 2004 and headquartered in Helston, Cornish Sea Salt benefits from unique geography. Serpentine and Gabbro stone in the sea off the Lizard Peninsula mean Cornwall's sea salt is naturally rich in magnesium and calcium, and low in sodium. The combination creates a strong, recognisable flavour popular with many top chefs. The company started with one product - their signature crystal sea salt - but now offers a large range including top-selling flakes and restaurant-standard seasonings. Cornish Sea Salt exports to over 33 countries across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, North America and Oceania. The company has won the Queen's Award for excellence in international trade, recognition of their journey from a simple idea to revive a historic Cornish trade into a world-renowned brand.
