Baked by Melissa was founded in 2008 by Melissa Ben-Ishay, who turned her passion for baking into reality after being let go from her job as an assistant media planner. What started in her Murray Hill apartment has grown into a beloved bakery chain known for its signature bite-size cupcakes.
The company's origin story is serendipitous - after baking her famous Tie-Dye cupcakes and sending them to work with a friend's sister at Alison Brod PR, Melissa received a call from the PR firm's caterer, who became one of the company's co-founders. The first pop-up location opened in March 2009 at Cafe Bari in SoHo, Manhattan.
Today, Baked by Melissa operates 14 locations across the New York City metropolitan area and Boston, with all cupcakes handcrafted in their bakery in North Bergen, New Jersey. Each bite-size treat is made with only the most delicious ingredients, and many stores allow customers to pick their own flavours from a colourful pastry case display.
Melissa has authored two cookbooks: 'Cakes by Melissa' (2015) and 'Come Hungry: Salads, Meals, and Sweets for People Who Live to Eat' (2024). The company also offers vegan options, making their treats accessible to more cupcake lovers.
