Le Chameau was founded in 1927 by French agricultural engineer Claude Chamot in Normandy, France. Tired of listening to his farmer, hunter and fisherman customers complain about uncomfortable boots, he developed prototypes for natural rubber wellies, pioneering the use of vulcanisation to create long-lasting, durable boots.
In 1939, when demand outgrew his Cherbourg workshop, Chamot moved production to Pont d'Ouilly near Caen, where the atelier remains today. In 1949, he opened a second branch in Casablanca, Morocco, changing the company name to Le Chameau ("the Camel" in French) in homage to his surname and the legendary resilience of camels.
Every pair is handcrafted by a single Maître Bottier (master bootmaker) with upwards of nine months of intensive training. After shaping and vulcanisation, each boot is fully submerged in water to confirm its waterproof quality before final inspection and polish. To this day, boots are still handcrafted in Casablanca.
