Rust-Oleum was founded in 1921 by Robert Fergusson, a sea captain who noticed that fish oil spilled on rusty metal decks stopped corrosion from spreading. Working with a chemist in Evanston, Illinois, Fergusson developed one of the world's first rust-preventive paints and Rust-Oleum was born.
The company remained family-owned until 1994 when it was acquired by RPM International Inc., reaching one billion dollars in revenue in 2015. In 1979, Neil Young adopted their slogan "Rust Never Sleeps" as an album name.
In the UK, Tor Coatings manufactures and markets the Rust-Oleum range from a purpose-built facility in County Durham, with additional production in Zelem, Belgium. Their UK range is water-based and low odour wherever possible, offering paint solutions for home, garden, and industrial applications.
