Green & Black's

Green & Black's was founded in London in 1991 by Craig Sams, an organic food pioneer, and Josephine Fairley, a journalist. The name derives from "Green" standing for environmental concerns and "Black" for the high cocoa solids chocolate they wished to provide.

While holidaying in Belize, Craig and Jo learned that local cocoa farmers had been left without a buyer. They stepped in to purchase the cocoa beans at a fair price, and in 1994, Green & Black's Maya Gold became the first chocolate in the UK to carry the FAIRTRADE Mark, winning the Worldaware Business Award for good business practice.

In 2010, Green & Black's became the UK's first chocolate brand to be awarded the Fairtrade Mark across its entire range. The company was acquired by Cadbury Schweppes in 2005 and later transferred to Mondelez when they bought Cadbury in 2010. In 2024, they celebrated 30 years as a Fairtrade Certified brand.
