Before planting, enrich the soil by incorporating plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. Summer-fruiting raspberry stems will need support; prepare a framework of horizontal wires stretched between two sturdy 1.8 m (6 ft) posts before planting. Autumn-fruiting varieties do not require supports. When planting raspberry canes, space them 60 cm (24 in) apart in a row along the wire supports. Be sure to water them well.
