Pyracantha ‘Soleil d’Or’, commonly known as Firethorn, is a reliable and easy-to-grow shrub that tolerates most conditions and will thrive in almost any location. Its thorny branches make this shrub virtually impenetrable which makes it a great choice for growing as a security hedge. Growing to a height of up to 3m if left unpruned, this fast-growing shrub provides a quick and easy year-round screen with its glossy evergreen foliage. With a tall, columnar habit, it’s ideal for masking a fence, training to a wall, hedging or growing as a free-standing shrub, but it’s also happy to be hard-pruned and kept to a much smaller size if needed. Pyracantha is a great choice for attracting wildlife, producing a mass of white flower clusters in spring which bees love, followed by fabulous golden-yellow berries in autumn which will provide food for birds. Grow Pyracantha plants as free standing shrubs or trained against a walls and fences. Plant Pyracantha in any well drained, reliably moist soil in sun or semi shade. Choose a position with shelter from cold, drying winds. Feed and water Pyracantha plants regularly until full established. Prune free standing shrubs in early spring, removing damaged and poorly positioned shoots. For wall trained shrubs, tie in main shoots to form part of the permanent framework and cut back unwanted shoots to the main stem.
