Small's Penstemon is a lovely species that is ideal for naturalistic planting schemes. Native to woodland margins and rocky slopes, Penstemon smallii copes in semi-shaded positions or full sun and enjoys a free-draining soil. This pretty perennial flowers earlier than border hybrid penstemons and has larger, broader leaves. In late spring and early summer, showy light purple blooms with white throats are borne on deep purple-bronze stems. In autumn, the fabulous semi-evergreen foliage becomes flushed with reddish bronze, which lasts over winter. Height: 60cm (24in). Spread: 40cm (16in).
