Their ease of growth and aftercare should be simple enough for anyone and a slug resistance once again emphasises their staying power. It might be hard to find a flower with a more impressive stamina and beauty than that of the penstemons. The best growing conditions for penstemons require planting in a sunny or semi shaded area with fertile and well-drained soil. Penstemons can tolerate dryer soils once they are established but dislike and are damaged by heavy soils that are very cold and wet in the winter. If you have to plant in heavy soil, adding plenty of coarse grit before planting would be recommended. Removing faded blooms will prolong the penstemon’s flowering, to give extra protection against frost in winter apply dry mulch around the base of the plant to protect the roots.
