Sow successionally throughout the summer for amazing yields that continue over a long period. Mature bulbs can be lifted and stored for using later on. Spring onions will grow in any good fertile soil provided it is well drained. Sow seeds from March to August at 3 weekly intervals. For an early spring crop sow seeds in September and over winter. Sow liberally 13mm (0.5in) deep in drills 15cm (6in) apart. No thinning is required. Harvesting can usually start 8 weeks after sowing. Spring onions are undemanding and require only occasional watering during particularly dry periods. However, rows should be weeded regularly.
