Ranging from a rich dark rose to deep purple, the mophead blooms of Hydrangea macrophylla 'Leuchtfeuer' almost resemble the firelight for which they are named after. This hardy shrub is easy to grow and will prefer an alkaline soil to help keep its colours true during the summer months, right through to the autumn. The foliage will also turn to tones of reds and yellows at the end of the season to add further interest. Grow in a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds, in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant in a patio container or pot in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Leave the faded flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant.
