This low maintenance hardy plant is ideal for growing in a dappled shade area or as part of a woodland-style planting scheme, making a robust, colourful and effective ground cover. For those with shaded patios, this fern will also thrive in a large patio container, providing a long season of colour and remaining evergreen in sheltered areas. Plant Dryopteris in a sheltered spot. Choose a position in dappled shade on fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Dryopteris ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting.
