Cornus alba ‘Siberica’, commonly known as Dogwood, is a well-known and reliable RHS AGM variety, suitable for growing in most gardens and conditions. It’s grown for its fiery, bright red stems which are revealed in autumn as soon as the leaves fall - these colourful stems are really a fantastic highlight for the garden in the dead of winter. For much of the year this deciduous shrub sits quietly in the background, providing a lush, leafy backdrop for surrounding flowers and plants. During summer, it produces its own flowers which are small, white and loved by bees and other pollinating insects. From autumn onwards, this useful shrub really begins to shine, beginning with the foliage turning to gorgeous shades or orange, yellow and purple. Once the leaves have fallen, the striking red stems take centre stage, providing colour that lasts in the garden right through winter. This versatile variety can be easily pruned to a compact size for small spaces or allowed to reach its full size of up to 3m. The younger stems carry the best colour, so it’s best to remove the older ones in spring. Grow Cornus plants in any well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun. Feed and water dogwoods regularly until fully established. Once established, they will require less attention. To encourage plenty of colourful stems, Dogwood will need regular pollarding in early spring. Cut back all dogwood stems to 3 buds above soil level or to a permanent low framework.
