The name comes from the French word franc, meaning luxuriant. It was one of the first gums, along with myrrh, to be used as incense. The tree is native to the Middle East, where it grows in a natural bonsai-like formation. Frankincense is often associated with divinity. This oil is widely used in aromatherapy for its calming properties. It is believed to help heal wounds and prevent scarring, as well as tone the face, reduce wrinkles, and prevent stretch marks in cosmetic products. Frankincense essential oil is also known for easing anxiety, stress, asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis, and severe coughs.
