Columbia Sportswear Company was founded in 1938 by Paul Lamfrom in Portland, Oregon, originally as the Columbia Hat Company. When frustrations with suppliers led the family to manufacture their own products, Columbia Hat Company became Columbia Sportswear Company in 1960.
Following the death of founder's son Neal Boyle in 1970, his wife Gert and son Tim took over operations, rescuing the company from bankruptcy. Under Tim Boyle's leadership as CEO since 1988, Columbia has grown into a global leader in outdoor apparel, footwear, and accessories.
The company's innovative technologies include Omni-Heat thermal reflective lining, Omni-Tech waterproof breathable fabrics, and OutDry extreme waterproof materials. Columbia distributes products in over 72 countries through 13,000 retailers, with brands including Sorel, Mountain Hardwear, and Prana.
