The Code Zone is an innovative online coding education platform designed for children aged 6 to 16 across the United Kingdom. Founded in 2019 by Paul Allington and Ashley Payne, two technology enthusiasts with backgrounds in software development, the company evolved from local in-person clubs to a comprehensive virtual learning environment.
Originally operating 11 physical clubs across Cambridgeshire, Essex, and Suffolk, The Code Zone pivoted during the COVID-19 pandemic to develop their online offering, receiving nearly £45,000 in funding from Innovate UK. The platform now offers two main paths: Game Dev Club with live weekly sessions, and the self-paced Academy.
Their flagship Game Dev Club program offers a progressive learning journey from block-based coding with Scratch for beginners to advanced text-based programming with Python and TypeScript. Children create and modify games while learning fundamental coding concepts, guided by DBS-checked, STEM-certified mentors during live sessions.
Every subscription includes access to Minecraft Mod Worlds using Minecraft Educational Edition, with over 120 guided projects available. The platform suits children aged 6 and upwards, including neurodivergent learners, with code leaders available daily from 9am to 6pm for support.
