Portmeirion was founded in 1960 by legendary pottery designer Susan Williams-Ellis, daughter of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis who created the famous Portmeirion Village in North Wales. Starting by acquiring A. E. Gray & Company Limited in Stoke-on-Trent, Susan began designing shapes and patterns that would become synonymous with quality British tableware.
The brand's most iconic design, Botanic Garden, launched in 1972 after Susan discovered antique botanical books. With its variety of individual floral decorations, it became an instant success and has been hailed as the world's most popular casual tableware design.
In 2009, Portmeirion acquired the Royal Worcester and Spode brands, later adding Nambé Mills in 2019. Today, Portmeirion Group's six brands - Portmeirion, Spode, Wax Lyrical, Royal Worcester, Pimpernel, and Nambé - have a combined history of over 750 years. The company remains based in Stoke-on-Trent, continuing its tradition of beautiful, functional tableware.
