Tefal was founded in 1956 by scientist Marc Grégoire, who developed a patented process for applying PTFE non-stick coating to aluminium frying pans at his wife's suggestion. Unable to interest established manufacturers in his innovation, Grégoire launched his own company, creating an entirely new product category.
The name "Tefal" combines TEFlon and ALuminium, reflecting the revolutionary technology. In the United States and Canada, the brand is marketed as T-fal due to trademark considerations with DuPont's Teflon brand.
Acquired by Groupe SEB in 1968, Tefal has expanded beyond cookware to include kitchen appliances, steam irons, and vacuum cleaners. Groupe SEB, headquartered near Lyon, France, operates in over 150 countries with 32,000 employees worldwide.
